WIMS sponsors middle/high school girls on a field trip to UF Health

paceWIMS hosted a field trip for a Girl’s Place and the Pace Academy summer camps.

We had almost 100 young high school-aged women in the Harrell for a day. They participated in a variety of activities including seeing ultrasound in action and learning physical exam skills.  One of the most popular parts of the day was tours of various parts of the medical center in small groups led by faculty giving the young women a chance to see faculty’s professional environments. Also popular was a lunch-time panel discussion where the students asked many questions of approximately 10 of our faculty from several departments. The students even did a craft project making art with maggots while learning how cool it is to be a forensic pathologist! The plan was to inspire the young women so they would consider careers in medicine and science. It turned out that they inspired us and highlighted our role and responsibility in the world at large!

Thanks to everyone who participated. It should also be noted that it wasn’t only women who participated in this community outreach event. Like most all our WIMS activities, all faculty are welcome to participate and would be more than welcome. Finally, a special thanks to Dr. Stacy Beals from Pathology who spearheaded the entire event and to all the faculty, staff, and students who participated.
